The first channel... the mechanic flavor is a bit off;
it requires too many rolls.

How about this -- when a drive/pilot roll is below the
Avatar: Charioteer skill, he can take an additional
action.

This packs the Drive roll and the Avatar into a single
toss of the dice.  Maybe you could make it also allow
flip-floping of the roll, so long as the result is
below your Avatar skill.
