three weeks ago I started a new job, which is about as UA as any I've held so far. I'm a gaming associate. I bank in casinoes, let me explain.
In California, Casinoes aren't allowed to make money off of a customer's losses. Thus, casinoes operate Card Rooms. You play cards and the casino gets a cut of the money bet (usually around 1%--but this varies from game to game). This means that if you want to play Blackjack or Doublehand poker (Pai-Gow poker) or the various tiles games where there is generally everyone playing against the house, one player has to be the house. If that player can only afford to bet five hundred dollars, and the rest of the table together bets three thousand, someone covers the difference.
That's where I come in. I work for a corporation that covers the excess bets. We also do some other betting stuff to make money that I can explain later, but the big thing we do is cover all bets. We play cards under specific circumstances, and do some other things, but what happens, ultimately, is that I get paid money to hang out in a casino, play cards, shmooze with gamblers, and watch for scams.
I've learded the most common and effective scams to use in a half-dozen games. I've also learned the optimal way to play blackjack and am learning the one for Pai-Gow. I have friends that ask me how it works, but I'm not allowed to tell them because I signed a non-disclosure agreement.
Something about it just seems so UA...
