He's a mathematician who developed paranoid schizophrenia but recovered and went on to win the
Nobel Prize. He was the subject of the recent Oscar award-winning feature film, A Beautiful Mind
starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly. I highly doubt that you're ignorant, but the
reference certainly isn't obscure. :)
