Incidentally, I'm trying to remember where I heard the idea that Van Gogh
DIDN'T cut off his own ear -- that he had a big drunken argument with
Gauguin and that Gauguin (who was maybe a fencer?  Maybe known for his ill
temper?) chopped it off, then freaked out when he saw his buddy bleeding
and unconscious.  While Van Gogh was out of it, Gauguin told the medicos
that it was self-inflicted.  When Van Gogh woke up from his fugue and asked
"Dude, what happened to my EAR?!?" (or the French equivalent),that's the
story he was told.
