Actually, I thought The Freak was his dead wife, too. An alternate
theory might go: TF was Dirk's wife, and possibly was following some
path along the lines of "the Dutiful Wife", being a view of women as
belonging in a secondary role to men and self sacrificng thereto. She
goes through the House of Renunciation, andcomes out with a powerful
hatred for the one she loved, and directly opposed to traditional
gender roles. Bonus points for drama if Dirk himself was the one
supposed to go through the house, and she volunteered to go in his
place, so that he could save himself.

Incidentally, the description of the Freak as a Cold War spy reminds me
of a Renaissance or Enlightenment era spy who dressed as a woman. When
he/she died, several doctors inspected the body, and half left
convinced that he/she was a man, and half were convinced he/she was a
hermaphrodite. Sadly, the name escapes me right now.
