Or... as sometimes happens in our game... The players seem to wait for the 
GM point the way to go, which is doubly difficult when there *is* no 
correct way to go. My players go through phases like this - they have 
plenty of things they could follow up, and most of them have particular 
motivations for one or more of those things, but sometimes they sit there 
like sponges waiting for the rains to come...

Then, of course, as a GM you have to fight the desire to "make stuff 
happen" too much, or you end up with too many things happening at the same 
time.

Its a wonderful balancing act. I wouldn't miss it for the world! :)

And the rewards!

One of my players wrote a novel about his character's background. A novel 
(well, 50,000+ words, not a really long novel), and has a web site with 
all sorts of stuff. And several of the others have as much investment and 
are prone, at times, to getting very involved in fleshing out stuff for 
their characters. Sure is motivational! :)
