I believe in its most
current U.S. publication(CoD) Walker Percy does an
intro that explains the tragedy behind the publication
of the novel. It is rather touching.
===========================
It is. I heard the story before I read the book, though, and I think it
colored my perception of it. Try to read it clean one time, then go back to
the introduction. And if you just have to, you could read The Neon Bible,
but I wouldn't recommend it. V, by Thomas Pynchon, is another good one about
the lives of inanimate objects. I think almost everyone's probably read it,
but it's a very good one to reread through a deliberately UA filter. Paoli
is a very UA kinda character.
