Oh, I wouldn't be so quick to attribute it to mere anti-Semitism. The
NYT, trying to be 'more-intellectual-than-thou' has a real problem with
religion in general. The whole thing smacks of the kind of coverage
that's done of the Virgin Mary appearing as mildew on the side of a
refrigerator in Scranton, PA, i.e., "look at the rubes". In this case,
there's the local angle and the presence of a Gentile witness, making it
less about a particular group and their 'wacky' beliefs, and more about
'O, the human condition...look at the rubes'. Basically, insulting
people as a community service.
