I'm wondering how you know they got these details wrong? Is there some 
story other than the Observer story and the New York Times one - 
<http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/15/nyregion/15FISH.html?ex=1048309200&en=b0f85b8140a241d1&ei=5062&partner=GOOGLE> 
- that we haven't seen? If so, the NYT is attributing statements to the two 
principals in the tale that they didn't make.
