Perhaps they could be used in conjunction with a couple of wheels from
the WWII Enigma machine which were, last I heard, still wissing, though
the main part of the machine had been found.

Actually, I'd say decryption fits that theme better.  Someone's
building a babbage engine to find the hidden message from god hidden
kabbalistically in the Torah, I'd bet.
