That's what I referred to as the Adelaide Effect (a term that a lot of my
SA friends use), and AFAIK, it's unique, at least in Australia. I grew up
in Canberra -- about a third the population of Adelaide -- and a school
friend of mine has just popped up, after going to ground to 18
months. Everyone thought that he was in Canada. That sort of thing
couldn't possibly happen in Adelaide; someone would've recognised him.

Um, me, for one. Actually, it wouldn't surprise me greatly if there were a
fair number here; Aussies seem to have a thing for "fringe" gaming. When I
was freelancing for DP9, a fair number of their writers hailed from Down
Under, and some of the best CoC scenarios that I've seen came out of
Melbourne in the early '90s. In a country that can point to both Priscila
and Chopper as parts of its cultural heritage, where most Liberals are
conservative, where anarchists protest for "global justice", and where we
eat our national symbols, is it that surprising that a game as weirdly cool
as UA might have a cult following?

Last night, I dreamt that I'd pinned Bruce Willis beneath an unpainted
section of picket fence in his front yard, and that I beat him to death
with a copy of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. I awoke with blood on my
face. Note to self: never eat penne before bedtime again.
