Ah yeah, the Clown. I wonder how many of us used to have nightmares
about Him?
I haven't had a chance to look at Break Today, but the picture inside
the front of LG$ is deeply spooky and evocative.
Actually, I didn't find the Clown all that scary in the waking world--
the one that got to me was the pie tree, the one with the big face in
the trunk. My parents brought a poster home from Mickey D's and put it
up on my bedroom wall when I was a toddler. That damn tree was right in
the middle of it. I knew it was looking at me. I knew it meant me
_no_good_. I couldn't rest easy with that poster staring me in the face
and had a hell of a time convicing my parents it needed to come down...
But I would occasionally have nightmares about the Clown. I remember
one where I was following him as an invisible spectator as he left some
kind of awards banquet-- then I lost track of him for a bit-- then I saw
him again, walking into a hidden elevator in the back of a crumbling
brownstone with a smoking revolver in his hand. He took the elevator
down, and down, and down... and finally got out into a vast, dark room.
Or rather, the room was dark, but every individual thing in it could be
seen clearly as if brightly lit. Scattered around the room were a
number of stained-glass circles between 4 and 6 feet across, in a sort
of sinister looking art deco style, standing upright in frames; and
enthroned in the center of the room was Satan.
Satan began to question Ronald, but I couldn't hear his words, only
Ronald's replies. "Yes!" he replied to the first question with a
vicious grin, shaking the pistol in an upraised fist. "No," he answered
the second one, looking a little confused. Satan spoke again, and
Ronald's face contorted in horror. "No!" He turned to run, but Satan
grabbed him telekinetically and started sliding him around the room
head-first, smashing him through all the glass plates...
