Faye Wong, who is one of the biggest pop stars in Asia, the subject of
endless reportage in HK tabloids, and also cute as a button.

See her in Wong Kar-Wai's unbelievably terrific one-of-the-five-best-
movies-ever-made CHUNKGING EXPRESS, in which she costars with other icon
candidates Tony Leung and Brigitte Lin.

I think Brigitte Lin may even be a bigger star than Faye Wong, but she
muddled up her icon status by a) reaching the peak of her fame by playing a
man (in the amazing SWORDSMAN movies), b) retiring from the movies, and
c) playing her final role in a blonde wig and dress designed to make her
look like Gena Rowlands.

Tony Leung should be an icon just because he's the most handsome man on
earth.

On another axis completely, that still-unknown, still-at-large fellow who
stood up to the tanks at Tiananmen Square sure is iconic. A BBC "where
the heck is he now" story from 1998 says that Time magazine claimed "his
moment of fame was seen by more people than laid eyes on Winston
Churchill, Albert Einstein and James Joyce combined." Sounds like an icon
to me.
