[UA] JONOTA Revisited

Hey all,
I just got back from some volunteer work that I'm scheduled to do once a
week until the NSW state election: media monitoring. I've just spent five
hours listening to three talk radio stations and watching two TVs --
simultaneously.
The whole idea is to listen for relevant stories and type up summaries to
email to various people, all the while keeping the tape rolling in case
someone needs to go back and transcribe an interview or something.
It sounds a lot easier than it is. After about half an hour, your brain
gets used to scanning five different streams of data, but all the while, it
tries to screen out the assault of overstimulation. Before you know it,
you've cranked everything up to almost painful levels. Imagine having five
people screaming at you for five hours -- that's what it's like.
I decided that I needed a beer afterwards, so took a fifteen-minute hike to
the nearest non-strip bar that I knew would be open at that hour. I
absorbed _everything_, like after a hit of piracetam; unlike piracetam,
however, everything hurt, like pouring salt into an open head wound. And
what really freaked me out was that I could hear the jukebox, every
clacking of a pool ball and every conversation in the bar -- and follow
them all. I hope that this goes away by morning; I've got three hours in
front of a risograph to do.
To think, I actually _volunteered_ for this shit. Now I know what MKULTRA
must've been like.

"'Kevin,' David interrupted, 'what the Germans should have done
was show the Russians a dead cat and ask them to explain it.'
"'That would have stopped the Soviet offensive right there,' I said.
"Zhukov would still be trying to account for the cat's death.'"
