That is a tough one.  Very hard to make a guy sitting and typing visually
interesting.

One way: 
If your geek is in an operations center of some sort, have the management
distraction device (MDD) do something interesting.

MDD's are visible in most movies... think of the large computerized map on a
wall, little red and green dots moving over it.

Swordfish used a MDD towards the end, when the hacker character was
transferring funds from bank account to bank account.  Little red dots would
appear on a world map, and transfers were shown as a dashed red line from
one dot to another.
