Speaking as both list moderator and UA fan, I'll also throw my support
in for Mage. Each has its own yummy goodness.
Looking at it from at least one point of view, the two games seem to
start from at least one similar concept - believing that the world works
the way you think it does has power. The difference would seem to be
that Mage categorizes this phenomena as fundamentally empowering and
healthy, whereas UA says that it is contrary to human nature and will
almost inevitably drive you nuts if work at it long enough.
That said, playing a degenerating crazy person has lost some of its
appeal. In the epic UA campaign I was in, we started out with an even
mix of avatars, adepts, a mundane, and one guy who was just
uncategorizable. By the end two of the adepts had lost their magic and
assumed avatar paths, leaving us with only one adept, a couple of
godwalkers, and the rest of the bunch. The magic paths were simply too
unstable for a group with the kind of hard-and-fast goals we had. Like
I said, it has its own very distinctive flavor, but it's not for
everyone. Mage is significantly more open ended (in terms of the
effects of magic and the like) - I wouldn't say it has more options, but
it does have very different ones.
The avatars, however, are pure gold and I'd play one of those again in a
heartbeat.
