Mage vs. UA?
Put me in the UA camp. I do like the ST system and some of the WOD games.
Mage was a mixed purchase for me (the version that I have is the latest, 3rd
I think). I liked the idea behind it. The powerful arch magi are gone,
trapped god knows where and its the lowly acolytes left in charge. At least
that was the impression I got from the blurb on the back and skimming
through the various setting stuff in the main book. However when reading toe
core rules I did not get that feeling. The magic system confused the hell
out of me and the only chronicle I've witnessed was a an uber-twink fest*
UA on the other hand, with its three power settings (gee, can it be set to
stun too?) grabbed me. The magic system was quirky but a good and simple
quirky. The setting had a real sense of mystery and strangeness that Mage
just didn't have. Hell, the only WOD game that does have a UA vibe is (dons
flame retardant suit from Reign of Fire, it withstood dragons breath so it
should withstand the internet) Hunter the Reckoning. A game that works
better if the players are ignorant of the WOD.
The only problem I have with UA is that its too obscure for the gaming club
I go to. When I try and describe it they dismiss it as a low-powered Mage
rip-off and say they'd rather play Mage! Philistines.
*Not that I'm saying Mage is a twinky game but that chronicle coloured my
view of it.
