No. It wouldn't be pointless at all. Watch any John
Sayles movie for a way to work a legend like this in
and, at the same time, make the story about something
else entirely.

I would heartily recommend NEVER bringing the
god-awful things into your game, but you could have
them constantly whispered about.

In fact, it might be neat if up-and-coming
Executioners and some flavors of wannabe started gold
plating their 9mms, just to freak people out.

Stolze has quoted this before, but there's a great bit
in "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron" which you may
want to draw upon for inspiration.

The brothers could just have spread the rumor that
their guns were very, very powerful and the one
surviving brother, no longer an Avatar (Too Old for
That Shit), saddened and deflated by the death of his
sibling, could eventually reveal to the players that
they were on a wild-goose chase.

Then you can have him act all suspicious and drop a
box in the river. Inside are 2 gold-plated 9mms with
a significant magical property: anyone who sees them
in use (even being used to threaten someone) beleives
them to be the fabeled guns. They have no other
powers except, of couse, the ability to kill people
under most circumstances.
