That's a tough one. Aside the fact I'm not an history buff, most spanish
mythology is heavily influenced by catholicism, which makes it less
UAble, EMO.
I don't think we ever had a 'true king' of the penninsula. Most of our
kings were a bunch of bastards who never cared for their land or their
people. Felipe II could fit the bill, maybe, if only because he was
obsessed with ruling a spanish empire and ruled both Spain and Portugal
(though the portuguese never accepted him as a king)
Wait. There is a potential portuguese once and future king here. Don
Juan Manuel, a portuguese heir who dissapeared while fighting the moor.
The portuguese hated Felipe (he wasn't a nice man, mind you), so they
fantasized about Juan Manuel coming back and becoming their king. IIRC,
some portuguese nobles where involved in a conspiracy to restore Juan
Manuel, or someone who claimed to be Juan Manuel.
Then there's Viriato, an iberian leader who fought against the romans
using guerrilla tactics (the romans coulnd't defeat him, so they bribed
a couple of his liutenants to asassinate him). He could be a sort of
true king, I guess, And speaking of historical/mythic warriors, there is
the Cid, of course, which was very much the Knight and become a
Masterless Man for a while.
Oh yeah, then there's Ramon Lull, who was a sort of occult Leonardo da
Vinci. Among other things, Lull is rumored to have turned lead into gold
and building a flying machine to escape the tower where he had been
imprisoned. There is an spanish RPG called Aquelarre which portrayed
Lull as the artificer of a sentient computer, made from woodwork and
gears.
The conquerors age have some juicy bits. There are rumors about Colon
having some previous info about the Americas (maybe the Piri Reis maps)
the whole thing about Hernan Cortes being Quetzalcoatl reincarnated;
Juan Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth; and the quest for the
legendary city of El Dorado, and the disastrous expedition whose command
was seized by Lope de Aguirre (a man who defined the term 'obsession')
That's all I can think for now. I'll try check some sources for more
stuff.
