Northern Lights by Philip Pullman. Then read the other two. Alternate
reality-based theological fantasy at its best.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. One of the funniest, most tragic books ever
written.

Something Happened, by Joseph Heller. Ditto, and also a lot more UAble
than Catch-22.

A Prayer For Owen Meany, by John Irving. Another funny tragic book with
theological overtones. Hmm, is anyone else spotting a theme here?
