Hmm, not sure about this at all. If the Gardener grew out of the first
experiments in agriculture then he is growing his plants ultimately for
either human consumption or human enjoyment (depending on the kind of
green thing). Possibly a taboo linked into a specific area of land or
whatever (as has been mentioned) that states that the Gardener must ensure
it is not exploited. Crops or whatever are allowed to be grown, but the
soil must be cared for, it must not be worn out for having a good harvest
this year won't make up for having no harvest for the next five years.
Of course this is going to restrict the Gardener as a PC due to the fact
that they aren't going to be travelling too far away from their 'patch'.
It's kinda like the rural equivalent of an Urbanomancer.
