According to many schools of thought (including Jewish) the more concentration given to a subject, the stronger the spiritual reality of the subject becomes. Even something that is not 'real' such as democracy, elvis, or the necromicon can gain a certain reality due to this. Just how much this reality touched onto the physical realm is in question.
(basic source that you can find is "the way of God" by Luzatto, translated by Kaplan, chapter 1 section 5 among others)
This means that yes, the Necronomicon is real and maybe this chick guy is a phychic that is seeing its spiritual representation (it its decided to show itself to him to mess with his head).
If you think that RPGs can get weird, just wait till you start reading some of the 'real' stuff. :)
(yes, I believe in magic as does just about every Orthodox Jew. Just not all study it or subjects close to it)
