In my experience, they're dissatisfied with me as a GM
and are trying to make a statement. This also tends
to hold true for people who make psychopaths and won't
add plot hooks or bother to act scared.
After talking to one guy last night, who kept
insisting on making a murderous software magnate (sort
of American Psycho meets Bill Gates) without any
concessions to the rest of the party (mostly a group
of inner-city kids who made art with urban refuse), I
discovered he'd gone with the character because he
didn't like my idea for a campaign and was even more
incensed that everyone else did. I gave up and let
someone else run a mecha game instead (in which we all
played inner city kids who made art with urban refuse.)
