I was thinking about this a while back, and I know it's been discussed
to some degree on the list. I was thinking of an occult underground
tarot, perhaps one that changed as new Clergy members ascended (I think
I got that idea from the list) or the dynamics of the underground
otherwise changed. (Mm, I like this. "You don't remember seeing this
card before. And the person on it looks familiar.")
The gist was, ditch the names of the cards, but keep the meanings -- so
card 7 (the Chariot, meaning (according to
http://www.learntarot.com/maj07.htm) victory, will, self-assertion, and
hard control) might be Alex Abel. Some cards might remain the same
(e.g. the Fool). Much of the symbology of the new deck would remain the
same: Alex Abel might be depicted in a limo (make sure to show the
driver, at least at the edge of the card) holding a symbol of his
authority (whatever that might be).
So, rereading your comments, my sense was that the cards would be
totally different, and would reflect modern symbology rather than
imposing their will upon it.
My tarot wouldn't be particularly useful for fortune telling, but (when
used by somebody clued-in) it might have some other kind of power --
e.g. holding the Alex Abel card (which wouldn't be labelled as such --
just an image, and perhaps the number if it's a major arcana card, which
might be useful to some players and/or characters) and spending a charge
might allow one to have a sense of his state, or send a message to him,
or something.
And what happens when you try to destroy a card?
Definitely something that people would want to get their hands on.
