Well, me, I've always seen the Flying Woman to be a new spin on the old
"virtuous virgin" archetype. You know, like in that famous French Revolution
painting, where the bare-breasted Liberty Maiden leads the revolutionaries,
carrying the Tricolore?

IME, the virtuous virgin represented an ideal and an utter, complete devotion to
that ideal (which does not necessarily have to be virginity). This devotion
lifts her above, and beyond, what is considered "normal" od "decent" for a girl
in her society. She might have followers, but it's not like she actively leads,
or needs, these followers. Her virtue and dedication, though, makes her somewhat
untouchable. I imagine something like the Godess Athena, Jean D'Arc, Mary
Woolstonecraft (the mother, not the daughter that wrote "Frankenstein"), or Dian
Fossey. It was only Amelia Earhardt who did put that "Flying Woman" spin to the
archetype.

But then again, I'm arguing from memory here, as I don't have my books at work,
and I may have been drinking too much Flensburger Pils lately... 8)
