No direct scriptural evidence, but its been believed so
since about the time the gospels were written, and the pope
said it was so a few centuries later (though that may not
count for much).

Actually, Mary Magdalene is definitely not Mary, the sister
of Martha.  IIRC, that is, there are passages
differentiating the two.

Downside = untouchable/unattainable, for good and bad?
