Well, you guys obviously don't listen to enough gangsta rap. ;-) Every second
song namechecks "my niggaz up North in the hole", and going from county to state
or state to federal institutions is perpetually referred to as "goin' up North".
Check out Snoop, Ice-T, any West Coast artist really. Even Lil' Kim ('How Many
Licks?') features this line.
As far as going West, the west (direction of the setting sun) has always been
associated with death just as strongly as the east is associated with sunrise
and rebirth. Whichever culture it was that buried people facing east was onto
this, as were/are the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
So we got South, North and West. All we need is east and we'll have an
association for each direction.
