I have heard "go north" as a euphemism for looking for work. I figured it was a Civil War thing, with former slaves going north for industrial work. I never heard it a lot.

I've heard "up north" in New Madrid and in some parts of Arkansas. I just
always thought it refered to Marion or Moberly.
