[UA] Re: Soundtracks (Long)

I've mixed up two soundtracks for the UA game that I play in. A somewhat
selfish indulgence, but certainly one that I've enjoyed...the success has
been 50/50, at least in my opinion. One was set to a more urban feel and the
second was very down tempo. I felt that the Urban soundtrack captured the
flavour of the UA campaign we're in, while the down tempo just didn't click.
Maybe I got greedy.

Here's the info on the first - UA Urban:

Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning
Well, it was cooler when it wasn't the theme song to the Soprano's, but it
still is a pretty good tune and sets the "urban feel" for soundtrack. And
you can't beat that opening line.

Moby - South Side
Starts off weird, but finds a kicking grove that works well to hide the
mayhem described in the lyrics - "Weapons in hand as we go for a ride, some
may come and some may stay"

T.I.P. with Beanie Sigel - 2 Glock 9's
Magazines loading, gunshots, phat beats and lots of swears...what more do
you need in an Urban gaming compilation? :-) From the Shaft soundtrack.

God Speed You Black Emperor - The Dead Flag Blues
What can I say about GSYBE? Perhaps the Canadian kings of the post-rock
genre, every recording they release manages to capture the desolation of an
urban environment while they put their spin on it. Each are truly
entertaining and worth a listen, this is a highlight, a 7 and half minute
monologue that starts off with:
"the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel
and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides
and a dark wind blows
the government is corrupt
and we're on so many drugs
with the radio on and the curtains drawn
we're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine
and the machine is bleeding to death"

Miles Davis - High Speed Chase
>From his last sessions and released on the Doo-Bop album, a wild frenetic
jazzy hip-hop tune that pulls you out of the monologue and dumps you in the
middle of downtown traffic.

Concrete Blonde - Tomorrow, Wendy
I was asked to add this by the GM. It stands out, a song that can sneak by
you, but if you listen you find a gem. Wendy is quite plainly told she will
die. It serves as a nice but creepy break.

Tilt - War Room
Punk break! Tilt, a kickin girl punk band blasts out a song about drug
abuse...or dealing with forces much more powerful than the pathetic UA
players.

Sick of it All - Call To Arms
The punk break continues with a straight up head thrasher. 'nuff said.

Lou Reed - This Magic Moment
He covers This Magic Moment with his trademark off-key sarcasm. Featured on
the Lost Highway soundtrack, which should be enough reason for it to be in a
UA soundtrack, but works as a nice salve for the punk break - visual: our
heroes cruising away from a brawl, victorious and high on adrenaline but
something looms darkly...

United Future Organization - Poetry And All That Jazz
A Japanese acid jazz group, they do more than sample Charlie Parker to a hip
hop beat. This tune features Jack Kerouac, perhaps cliche, but I did warn
that this whole thing was a selfish indulgence.

Matthew Good Band - Load Me Up
Alright, enough of that intellectual stuff. Lets rock. Another one with a
great groove and neat lyrics..."Murphy's fighting Ocham; you're in the
stands" always makes me smile; the dilemma of a UA player.

Electrasy - Cosmic Castaway
The rocking continues with just one of those catchy tunes that popped up on
the Titan AE soundtrack. Provides a nice background to frenetic comic book
style action.

Buck 65 - Fifteen Minutes to Live
This hip hop artist out of Halifax, Canada recently released a CD and is
currently touring. This is the song that got him a lot of notice. Just over
14 minutes long with a driving hypnotic melody that weaves well over the
cynical but thought provoking and political lyrics.

Electric Skychurch - Outside
A quiet ambient tune, with great environmental sounds - taking shelter from
the rain and enjoying the moment when a city stops. Quietly fades and if
you're not really paying attention, you hardly notice the music has stopped.
