Close, but no cigar.  Ronnie Reckmeyer's condition was the result of an
avatar channel -- one being inflicted on him.

The two jocks are canon, described in LG$.  I've always figured the guy who
wanted her but could never have her was Gunter Lorenz, the eccentric
director on the other side of the camera.

That would create a powerful resonance, wouldn't it?  There's no character
in the movie who's the analogue of the voyeur/viewer.  The analogue is the
director himself.
