Ahem.
For those on the list who aren't Matlock fans, here's
a breif (and probably slightly inaccurate, well, maybe
wholly inaccurate) history of Mayberry.
Way, way back when (in the 60s), a young actor named
Andy Griffith starred in a very funny movie/play
called "No Time for Seargants" in which a very dumb,
very strong backwoods hick with a high alcohol joined
the airforce and turned things on their ear. (Sound
like another American sitcom? Well, that's another
story.)
Andy Griffith got a lot of attention for this show, as
well as some of his other comedy work, and he landed a
television show. The Andy Griffith Show was about a
small town southern Sherrif (played by and named after
Andy -eponymous, eponymous, eponymous- ) who solved
problems with home-spun wisdom and clever tricks
rather than, as many other Sherrifs did on TV before
and since, with a gun. The show featured Don Knotts
as Andy's very nervous, gung-ho deputy (who, as I
recall, was not allowed any bullets for his own gun -
out of fear for public safety.) The show also
featured a young Ron Howard (who starred as the
dangerously psychic child in the Twilight Zone episode
based off Jerome Bixby's "It's a Good Life.")
Perhaps it should be noted that Bixby also wrote "Day
of the Dove" for the old star-trek series, one of the
most Ua-able of all that series' run (except for,
hahaha, the one where Captain Kirk and this woman
switch bodies so, hahahaha, Shatner acts like a girl
almos the entire episode. I laughed so hard I broke
all my furniture.)
