Vatican 2000
1975
**1/2
Prod & Dir, Roger Corman
Nick Mancuso
Tanya Roberts
Earnest Borgnine
Susan Tyrell
David Caradine as The Pope

In the year 2000, the Earth has been ravaged by nuclear disease. Mancuso stars as a young priest, emerging from Vaultus Templarium, a sort of Jesuit bomb shelter, to bring God back to the mutants. Borgnine, whose costume and appliances reportedly weighed over 70 lbs, gives a surprisingly soulful performance as Cragmar, the mutant war chief, contemplating the sacrifice of his own wife (Tyrell.) This film, despite Corman's characteristic inattention to detail and over-the-top narrative scope, manages to spin an engaging yarn of damaged people finding faith in impossible circumstances. Until Carradine, as the cigar-chomping, kung-fu fighting commando Pope, leaps from a helicopter(!) to save the priest from crucifixion on a cross built of junked cars. If you can endure the production values and the standard mid-seventies environmental tropes, this one's worth the rental for the sit-com passion play, alone.

"Vatican II: Still Not Vatican Enough", starring John Paul II as the Pope
and Joe Pesci as Little Vinny, opened up to horrified audiences on
Wednesday. One cinema-goer said "I've never seen the word ecumenical used so
many times in one movie before! I had to cover my son's ears!"
