Actually, both got beheaded in the end.  John the Baptist while Jesus was 
still alive, Paul under Nero several decades later.  And neither is the 
spiritual ancestor of the Pope -- that's St. Peter.  (*He* was supposedly 
martyred in the same persecution that got Paul, but not being a Roman 
citizen, he was crucified rather than beheaded.  Crucified head downward at 
his own request, according to tradition, because he felt unworthy to die in 
the same manner as Christ had.)
