In literature, vampires tended to crop up as monsters,
if they cropped up at all.  Byron and Pollidori's
vampire stories (or, in Byron's case, fragments of a
story) were derived more from German goblin tales
(like the Goblin Bridegroom.)In this vein, they were
grotesques and freaks.

In Romania, vampires were more like an inivisible evil
spirit that lived in a corpse.  The corpse tended to
be immobile.
