I just developed an additional theory, that tacks on to the whole them
dating thing because it makes it even dirtier and nastier.

They were both competing for the same position:  The Dream Fulfilled. 
Consider how many young people want to be doing something exciting and
glamorous.  Abel became a millionaire, mansion, yaught, golf the whole bit. 
He fulfilled the classic definition of the American Dream.  

Consider how many teenage boys and girls (yes both of them, I have numerous
female friends who fantasized about it) want to be strippers or porn stars. 
There's a seedy glamour to it.  It's edgy, dangerous and sexy.

Abel got his in an obvious way, all the joy that money could buy, and it
suited him well.  TNG got hers too, and got caught in the quagmire of scum
and nastiness that is the sex industry.  And the naked goddess ascended,
because ultimately, more people think the dream is a lie.  In this
postmodern society, we're more likely to look for the touch of grey than the
silver lining.

The cult of the naked goddess isn't creating avatars because they're looking
the wrong way, it's about fulfilling someone else's fantasy (and to a lesser
extent it sucking), not about fucking the same old bodyguard...
