As far as I know (and I could be wrong on this, 'cos it's mainly an American 
thing as far as I know, and I'm writing this from Ireland, but at least 
you're getting some sort of answer from the same time zone...) a gated 
community is basically one walled off and protected from the rest of the 
city. You can't get in except through the main gate, which is manned by 
security people, and you need to be a resident or guest of a resident to get 
it. 

Basically, they're great for keeping "undesirables" out. 

A lot of these communities tend to have fairly strict rules about the 
appearance of your house, acceptable behaviour, etc.
