That's why I'm fond of my explanation of The Cruel Ones as retired members
of the last Godhead. In this case, Dion would be a member of the old clergy
who somehow happened upon new power in the brave new world he's fashioned.
He (as well as most of the retired clergy) is desperately trying to fend off
death, because to die as a mortal would be to die forever. No beyond the
veil. No nirvana, no reincarnation. You've become the ultimate insider,
and now you're trapped in the box. Dion endures because he's bought into
some of the new myths of this world, while exploiting some of the lies. He
knews more than anyone has a right to know, and, like the Gump de St.
Germain, he's been present at critical moments in history.
I also have another theory that isn't developed at all--things are different
now than they were before. There are threshholds in the Clergy, perhaps
when 111 and 222 are filled. Reality changes slightly. Back then, perhaps,
the IC didn't really ascend as much as become godlike, and they are the root
of our myths today. Sometime around the fall of Troy (and perhaps as a
direct result of that conflict), all future ascensions involved the bodily
disappearances that we all know and love. Those who were deified has a
choice of 'beaming up' or sticking around. Some went, which explains why
the Roman gods were less hands on than their Greek counterparts. Dion just
stuck around to see what else was going to happen.
