  other society in the West.  Being the super-power means you get to ignore
  your neighbours.
  
I really don't mean to make light of what you're describing or even dispute
it, The average American is blithely unaware of how life operates in Canada
or Mexico, much less countries we don't immediately border, but there's
something about:

That strikes me as amazingly postmodern.  I love it.
