well, you do swing your weapon but you're not really trying to knock them
over or anything. in fact, combatants are meant to pull their blows. as for
stabbing, the latex weapons are made with a plastic core that could
conceivably poke someone in the eye or something. plus is weakens the latex
and reduces the weapon's lifespan, so most groups ban stabbing movements.
like i said, it's still pretty abstract but i think it captures the feel of
combat a lot better than the GM coming up and saying "you lost, fall over"
and everyone else pretending they just saw a fight. plus in an ongoing fight
between people others may choose to get involved. in one game a while ago
another player was taken as a hostage, which was quite fun (though not for
their character).

i don't know what the situation in the US is, but over here there's quite a
few companies who specialise in making latex weapons. along with all the
usual fantasy stuff they also make things like hammers, knives, frying pans
and chainsaws
