i'm vaguely aware of US lrp stuff... are boffers like really big padded
swords? because the ones we use are made out of latex, a lot more "real
sword" size, less swinging involved.
a lot of systems here that use weapons are pretty rubbish. but some are
good, and they're the ones that have molded my opinions on live gaming and
combat

heh. no comment on the women. except to say it's pretty unfair on them. but
they do tend to get a lot of attention, at least in most of the games i've
been to. unfortunately the male-female ratio in most live games i've been to
has been pretty similar to that in most tabletop games, ie not very good.
as for whacking things, that's just something you have to learn not to do,
along with hitting in the face and stabbing. lrp combat isn't a very good
simulation of real sword fighting, but it's certainly a lot closer in feel
than scissors-paper-stone. not that i'd expect there to be a lot of sword
fighting going on in a UA game anyway, of course.
