I suspect Greg's referring to the infamous hunter-net incident white wolf
tried, which went something like this:

WHITE WOLF WEBMASTER: Oh my God! WW have been bought by mystery investors! I
don't know if we're still in business or anything? I think they're going to
shut us down or make us do computer games or something.
FANDOM: FUCK. Let's all run around like headless chickens and speculate
about the industry collapsing. Gibber. Eeep. Neewhom.
WHITE WOLF WEBMASTER: Arrgh! I'm still not sure what's happening, but here's
the URL for our new bosses.
(The URL leads to a hunter: the reckoning promo site.)
MINORITY OF FANDOM: Hey, this URL leads to a promo site. Something
smells....tacky.
MAJORITY OF FANDOM (ignoring the URL): AAAAAGH! GAMING'S DOOMED! WHY DIDN'T
I HUG REIN*HAGEN WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE.
Rumours spread out to somewhere around Sirius within a matter of days. The
dead rise and post arguments on newsgroups. Every Comic-Book-Guy clone tells
his customers that White Wolf is dead and gone.
WHITE WOLF WEBMASTER: Ha! It was all a witty prank! We're so smart! We
haven't been bought at all!
FANDOM: Git.
