I'm sure Tim can tell it better than I, but since I've experienced the
horror that is the Whiskey Flask...

It doesn't have anything to do with cons, but Mage: The Ascension.  It's
an old and terrifying arguement about the nature of coincidental magic. 
Basically, it boils down to how you let it work.  Can a person with Life
stop damage and explain it by a whiskey flask in his pocket or does he
need matter?  After I experienced it (the third time around too, I
think) I decided Mage was unplayable.  

Then I discovered Unknown Armies.

Well, not really.  It just makes a better story.
