AAARGH! You know who Jane and Michael Banks were but
you've never seen one of THE perennial movies about
the British conflict between being hidebound by duty
and allowing for human frailty?
Bridge Over the River Quai and Stalag 17 are, for me,
the two best William Holden performances, ever, and
very probably the most important movies about human
interaction during WWII (that and "The Human
Condition," but it's six hours long and in Japanese.)
Also, a lot of my relatives were in prison camps and
one of my Dad's best friends from High School, Doug
Hoshi, was born in one, right here in the US. One
Victory in the Pacific day, they used to stand on
opposite sides of the hallway outside the school
cafeteria and shoot drinking straw wrappers at one
another. (You know, you rip off a bit of the paper
covering the drinking straw and blow real hard on the
open end to turn it into a projectile. Sometimes you
have to crumple up the far end, first, so the air has
a pocket to fill up.)
