I'm not sure I understand... why wouldn't you let the players roll the dice?
To keep damage secret?
If you wanted to, you could have them roll, and then alter the dice roll a
little bit. So perhaps a moderate bunch causes bruises and aching (for a few
points of damage more) over time. That way, the players would still be
unsure of their health.
I'm quite in favor of bleeding.
