There are some interesting ways to deface US paper money using the
design itself.
In particular, old US bills (probably new ones, but I'm too lazy to
check my wallet right now) bear the legend 'FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE' in
reverse print (the letters are uninked and the space around them is
inked). It's a simple matter to black out some of the letters and get the
message 'FEDERAL SERVE NOT'.
They also bear the message 'THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS,
PUBLIC AND PRIVATE.' Strategic blackening here yields the message 'THIS
NOTE IS ALL DEBT.' There *must* be a plot hook there.
