Actually, I agree with 4 slim books a year at a
cheaper price. My money comes in slowly and I'm not
often able to splurge. Sometimes I'm more solvent
than others, but I prefer to feel like I'm only
blowing a little cash at a time on my favourite hobby
than blowing chunks out the window.
My wife also likes to go shopping now and then as a
little treat. She really doesn't mind what kind of
shopping it is, but she prefers to get more at a go
than spend a lot on one little thing.
I'm happy to buy the books whenever I can, but I'm
more likely to buy several items which are each less
than $20 (even if the total cost comes out greater
than $20) than I am to buy one monster book at $20 or
$30.
As evidence, I offer this example, of which I am
deeply ashamed. I have wanted a copy of Tigris &
Euphrates for some time, but the damn thing costs $50.
So, instead, when I had a little windfall this month,
my wife and I went out and spent $100 on several
different games, including GURPS: Diskworld Also, the
original TfOS (which was in the used bin for $5, a
greater crime I have not seen), something from Flying
Buffalo about the Black Plague, something called
Chrononauts which turned out to be lots of fun (I
almost didn't buy it because it was nearly $20), a
couple of Dr. Who miniatues (no Daleks) in the used
bin and, of course, two cheapass games. If there'd
been a $15 UA supplement, or even several $5-10
octavos, I would have picked them up.
I'm cheap, not smart.

Yeah, I have Progenitors and Sons of Ether because
that's all that really caught my fancy in Mage.
I prefer a small, consistent publication to an
expansive "One with Everything."
To me, RPGs are a great past time, but I have a lot of
other stuff to do. I may post to this list a lot, but
it's usually right before I go to work or as an excuse
to take a break from some prolonged chore my wife
wants done Right Now.
No, I definitely vote for 4 slim books over 2 huge
ones. Roleplaying should appear cheap, even if it isn't.
