I kinda got the feeling that Forsythe chose an Atlantean heritage because it was something people already believed in, and so less magical meddling was involved to boost his rep. He could have done it the other way, but it seemed like he was just hitching his rep onto the coattails of Atlantis's pre-existing rep in the occult community. Of course, that might just be what he engineered it to seem like.
