That pretty much fits in with the classical evolution
of magic.  It starts out with appeals to the
supernatural and then, when that doesn't work well
enough, attempts to imitate the supernatural.  It
eventually says "to hell with it" and sells itself on
the assumption that you, too, can control the
supernatural.
