If you're looking for examples of avatars, Mage is good. The channels/powers are all different, but it gives an idea how these things work.

It seems to me this is rather like some prior discussions about pushing another person along a path. The actual avatar status of the person pushing may help some, if they've chosen an appropriate pair of archetypes, but it comes down to making the other guy act in the right manner, which can be hard (not impossible) unless they're cooperating.
I'd say that it gives some boost to them, and that they can keep the boost as long as they keep acting as the archetype does. So the Mentor can create a Hero (or whatever... referring back to Mage, this is like the Merlin character starting Kevin on his path and then disappearring for several bits, etc) and let the Hero go off on his own. Once the Hero's off on his own, though, there's no gurantee he'll act that way (particularly if the whole avatar thing hasn't been explained to him).
