One thing I've put in the MA book is that when posters start butting heads,
the list owner is sometimes forced to request a "time out" -- that is
"Okay, for the next five days, nobody is allowed to post about giving
Special Orders to children.  At the end of that time, if people still want
to discuss it, we can try again."

If the reinstatement of capital punishment was clearly doing nothing to
reduce the number of murders in those states permitting it, it certainly
appeared to be cutting down on the number of confessions.
